Cricket, however, has more in it than mere efficiency. There is something called the spirit of cricket, which cannot be defined..

Saturday 30 October 2010 Shortened games today St Charles College vs Clifton College |

THE SAINTS PLAYED HOST TO CLIFTON COLLEGE, Durban, today at Harwin Road to a full set of fixtures. Those fixtures which Clifton could not fill were filled by Maritzburg College. Meanwhile the Prep School played their fourth term fixtures against Cordwalles and Highbury with their Prep First and U11A XI teams at Highbury. With the Hillcrest school still smarting from their shock (and only) loss of the hockey season to St Charles Prep, they were determined to replay the compliment - which they barely did. Most of the games against Cordwalles went the St Charles Prep way. Details may be posted on the Results page of this web site presently. All games were shortened to 30 or 35 overs today to accommodate those parents wishing to travel to King's Park to watch the Currie Cup final. The First XI met Clifton College on the St Charles College oval. Clifton won the toss and chose to bowl on a hard, dry pitch. Thank you to all four schools for the games. A note from the Webmaster is that the Saints U15A side on Conway Field (in the far distance above) was beaten by 3 wickets in a low-scoring, tense and closely contested game. While we don't like to lose, we are nevertheless delighted that Clifton's cricket is developing as well as it is as we nurture a good relationship between the Schools. Well played to all the boys. WATER POLO IS BACK THIS QUARTER, today at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (Pmb) pool. A full round of matched age-group games were played against visitors, Michaelhouse. The boarders were at the games which they seemed to find entertaining. Thanks for joining us today, MHS. Well played to all. PHOTOS (Justin Waldman) Webmaster | UKZN (Pmb) pool | 2010 10 29 |

Friday 22 October 2010 Kingsmead outing a damp squib St Charles College First XI vs Glenwood |
||
![]() |
||
AT KINGSMEAD CRICKET GROUND, DURBAN this afternoon and evening the St Charles College First XI were guests of Glenwood High School for a limited 45-overs game - as part Glenwood's centenary celebrations. Having won the toss the hosts batted well for about 38 overs and then slowed dramatically. At one stage 250 seemed to be on the cards, but they concluded their innings with 228/6 in their 45 overs. Matthew Tweddle bowled well to take 3 wickets in 22 runs. After a supper in the KZN Cricket Union diningroom the Saints took to the field in the face of a strong south westerly wind and approaching storm. Almost immediately the St Charles College boys were bogged down and never looked like assuming any kind of dominance. A storming performance from St Charles College never (nor the storm for that matter) materialised - their reply, like the weather, was very much a very light and occasional drizzle affair as a seemingly unfocussed SCC side pulled in a low 124-all-out. The best performances were those of Dean Robinson and Matthew Ford with 23 runs each while the remainder of the team never looked comfortable in the face of good bowling on a flat track. Local wisdom says that batting second at Kingsmead is a path to disaster. It was therefore a good toss for Glenwood to have won. The 21 wides the visitors bowled did little to help the St Charles cause, and much to help the hosts (though they too had their fair share of wayward bowling). The Saints only comment was that it was very difficult in the middle after supper. Nevertheless, well played Glenwood on your 104-run victory. Thank you for hosting us today. We look forward to hosting you in February next. Webmaster | Kingsmead, Durban | 2010 10 22

Saturday 16 October 2010 Cricket at the Colleges Prep score 10 out of 10 vs Clifton Nottingham Road |
||

||
AT ST CHARLES COLLEGE TODAY city rivals, St Charles College and Maritzburg College, faced up to each other for a series of cricket fixtures. The two Schools' First and age-group A sides played each other, with the lower opponents' sides being staggered one down - MC C vs SCC B etc. Unfortunately, as is so typical of the climate here in KwaZulu-Natal, the weather dominated proceedings after lunch resulting in those games underway around 2:30pm being washed out by a series of increasingly heavy showers blown in from the south. It was really nice to see the Maritzburg College First XI on our Oval again after a lengthy time separated largely because of the massive inequality of numbers. Well played to all the boys and thanks to the Saints parents for organising a tasty braai on the Paddock lawn for the Maritzburg College visitors. The Prep First XI visited our great friends, Clifton Preparatory School, Nottingham Road, while the Third XI played an exciting game on J Richards Field at Harwin Road. This game went down to the wire - St Charles managed to secure the last Clifton wicket to win the game by 3 runs - in the last over. The First XI at Nottingham Road had a great game - winning by 10 wickets with 36 overs to spare in a 50 over match. Zac "smack-attack" Koutsouris knocked up 62 not out. Thanks too to Clifton who've given us some great games this year. Well played both Schools. Results will be posted on the Results page later. PHOTOS: (Justin Waldman) 1. Saturday 9 October 2010 Prep First XI @ St Peter's Twenty20 Michael Darroch's lucky 13 |
![]() |
AT THE ST PETER'S TWENTY20 FESTIVAL in Sandton, St Charles Prep, as at the end of Saturday, have had a clean sweep of three matches out of three. In what is possibly Michael Darroch's (above file photo: Justin Waldman) best day in his young cricket career he led St Charles Prep to two last-ball victories with fours struck off each. Michael, for whom the text-book cover drive is his signature stroke, celebrated his 13th birthday today. Lucky for some. Well done Michael and the team. Mr Rowan Irons and Chad Barron have the boys in their care at St Peter's, and return after the game tomorrow. The early Saturday morning rain in Maritzburg saw the cancellation of all St Charles campus fixtures, though the Second XI did manage to have a game at Howick High School against their First XI in which the St Charles Second XI were 190 all out (J Esteves 33, R Stanbury 3 for 24 & B, Hayworth 3 for 49). In reply, the Howick First XI were 133 all out (B Weakley 5 for 22 and G Rall 3 for 25) and the St Charles Second XI won by 57 runs. It is always a pleasure to visit Howick High School - the parents there go out of their way to accommodate visiting teams - and St Charles College thanks them very much for all the effort they put into making a grey day something to enjoy. In Sandton this morning, the Prep First XI ended their winning streak with a loss to St Benedict's Prep by 10 runs. Well done to all the cricketers! Sleep well and travel safely.
